Hardwick and Mendham Monthly Meeting was established in 1797 by Shrewsbury and Rahway Quarterly Meeting out of Kingwood (Quakertown) Monthly Meeting and Rahway & Plainfield Monthly Meeting. Its name was changed in 1811 to Hardwick & Randolph. The Orthodox branch of this meeting was discontinued in 1828 and its members were attached to Rahway & Plainfield Monthly Meeting (Orthodox). John Cox (1860-1951), Quaker genealogist, lived in or near New York City for most of his life. He was an architect, engineer, and poet, but his primary interests were religious tolerance and genealogy. As Custodian of Records for the New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, he worked to collect surviving records from both Orthodox and Hicksite meetings.
